About This Course

House legend Lenny Fontana shows you how to use basic compression and EQ on your low end. 

In this workshop Lenny works on the kick, bass, guitar and other elements from his track with Chris Willis: 'Top of the World'. Lenny uses external plugins from Waves to add compression and EQ and as a bonus he shows how to glue your kick and bass together. He uses Digital Performer but the techniques can be applied to any DAW. . 

In this lesson you will learn:

  • The basics of compression and EQ: when to use them and how to apply them successfully. 
  • How to use compression on: 
    • A kick drum.
    • A live bass recording.
    • A live guitar recording.
    • Conga’s.
    • Horns.
    • Rhodes?
  • How to glue your kick and bass together with the Shadow Hills: Class A, Mastering Compressor. 

Lessons: 

1. Intro and Track Playthrough: 

Lenny introduces himself, what the lesson will cover and plays through the track that he will be working on. 

2. Compression on Kick and Bass:

In this chapter Lenny applies compression to an acoustic kick drum and then a live recorded bass guitar from his track. He explains the uses of compression, what to listen for and how to apply it to each element. He then adds fine tuning whilst playing the kick and bass together.  

  • Bass compression using a DBX 160 (s). 
  • Kick compression.
  • Listening to the kick and the bass at the same time to add fine tuning.

3. EQ on Kick and Bass:

Using EQ on the kick and bass to accentuate the elements that you like and remove those that you don’t. Lenny talks you through eqing these two parts of your track, explaining what you are aiming to achieve and how to do it. Once this is locked in he plays them with the whole track to show how to adjust their volume levels effectively.  

  • Eqing a kick using the SSL G-Channel.

  • Listening with the rest of the track to adjust volumes. 

4. Compression and EQ on Live Guitar: 

Using compression and EQ on a live guitar recording to control it and bring out certain qualities, making sounds brighter or darker and which Hz responds to which part of the sound. Once again Lenny uses the DBX 160 (s) and SSL G-Channel.

5. Compression and EQ on Conga’s:

Using compression and EQ on conga’s to control the sound and bring out elements that work in your track. Using the compressor to tame the dynamics, Lenny then uses an eq preset and adjusts to bring out the slap of hands on the top of the drum.

6. Compression and EQ on Horns:

How to use a compressor to control the dynamics of horns and an eq to adjust the sounds to taste. Lenny shows how to bring the peaks of your horns down without squashing them and how to make them brighter but not screechy.

Controlling Rhodes in your tracks and emphasizing the qualities that you like and fit with the vibe. Lenny shows how to control their dynamics, eq to taste and then readjust volume so that your Rhodes fit in the mix.

In this workshop, Glimpse dives into using distortion on drums, vocals and setting instruments up in the mix. Chapter 4: Synthesising Drums Some of the initial preset banks are synthesised sounds, Enyon shows us how to create drums from sine waves.
Production Techniques & Sound Design for Balearics & Disco w/ Alessandro Doretto Looking into a slower genre of dance music, Ballearics, Alessandro shows us his process in crafting sounds to fit the track, making drums groove, transitional effects and working with a choir vocal You will learn: MIDI Drum Patterns Writing Melodies Creating Arpeggios Sampling a vocal Transitional Effects Sampling guitars Arrangement Chapter 1: Introduction Working at 105BPM, Alessandro goes through the 2 variations of the track he will be going through for this session. Chapter 2: The Drums Looking into creating live sounding drums, Alessandro shares his tips for creating MIDI drum patterns. Chapter 3: Melodies Creating pads and using a Fender Rhodes sample, this is how Alessandro created the melody and chord structure for this Balearic track. Chapter 4: Arpeggios Using Operator and Ableton’s Arpeggiator effect for MIDI, Alessandro creates emotive arps to fill up the track. Chapter 5: Transitional Effects & Arrangement How to fill up space with transitional effects and introduce new sections into the track. Track Deconstruction: Colly Wolly w/ JackyINTRODUCTION TO JACKY Chapter 1: Starting the track Jacky looks at his template which he starts every track with. In it he has set up 1 audio track and 1 MIDI track. He then shows us his Return channel template, which consists of 5 return channels, 1 Reverb and 4 Ping Pong Delays. Chapter 2: Arranging the project Jacky shows us how he organises his projects, stating that organisation is key. He labels various sections of the track (intro, break, ride, etc) so that he can quickly jump to sections within the project. Chapter 3: Transient Envelopes Using Ableton's transient warp feature, Jacky highlights an interesting way to work with loops. By adjusting transient lengths you can change how a loop sounds entirely. Chapter 4: Audio Effect Racks Grouping audio effects can speed up your workflow, Jacky has his audio effect rack template as his go-to for every channel. It consists of a Compressor, EQ Eight, Auto Filter, Utility and Simple Delay. Creating Good Remix Parts w/ Saytek Looking at exporting stems for other producers to remix, Saytek demonstrates the importance of organisation, volume levels and labelling when it comes to the export. He then begins a remix of his own track, looking at various production techniques and working with only Ableton stock plugins. You will learn: Exporting stems Re-sampling with Simpler Tweaking remix parts Recording into arrangement view Slicing to MIDI Creating pads Creating risers & fx Working with a vocal Sampling background noise
Mixing Techniques w/ Richard EarnshawLooking at a track he has mixed for BBE Records, as well as a work in progress, Richard dives into the art of mixing, looking at various dynamic processes you can carry out to make instruments sit well together, such as additive & subtractive EQ, stereo imaging, mixing kick & bass, compression, reverb & delays + more. You will learn: What is additive EQ What is subtractive EQ Ways of using these EQ functions Stereo Imaging Mid/Side EQ Mixing kick and bass Sidechaining Compression Chapter 1: Additive & Subtractive EQ The difference between additive and subtractive EQ. Subtractive EQ is great for detailed changes and is a much warmer approach to EQing your music, Additive EQ adds gain to the bandwidth selected, try keep this as broad as possible to avoid pops and harsh harmonics becoming the focus in your mix. Chapter 2: Stereo Imaging A look at Mid Side EQ, nowadays imaging softwares like Izotope Stereo Imager can carry out these functions, albeit less precise than manual mid-side EQing, which can be done in Ableton & Logic’s stock EQ plug-in. He answers the questions: What tracks would you use imaging softwares on? How do you balance kick and bass? Chapter 3: Kick & Bass Dance music is all about the kick and bass relationship. Richard talks about sidechaining and softwares that can carry out sidechaining like Nicky Romero Kickstart. He discusses other dynamic VSTs like multiband compression, and recommends the Sonarworks Room Correction software as a vital mixing tool. He answers the question on what is the difference between a stereo master and stem master. Chapter 4: Compression As a rule of thumb, RIchard would always bus his tracks together. Ie all drums will be bussed to one channel, as would the backing vocals and melodic instruments. Richard starts off with the API-2500 compressor from waves and talks about SUMMING and creating Track Stacks. Q/A Do you write the track first and mix later, or mix as you go? Are there any specific processing effects you could recommend for bass? Do you put anything on the master buss when your sending it to be mastered? Chapter 5: Track playback Looking at an afro style house track, Richard gives us a preview of how this mixed and mastered track sounds. Chapter 6: Drum Bussing Richard busses all his drums into one return channel, he uses compression from the API-2500, slight saturation from the Virtual Tape Machine and RC24 Chapter 7: Reverb & Delay The 2 essential spatial mix effects. Richard discusses ways of creating percieved loudness as oppose to heavy limiting. He uses Echoboy and Valhalla Room Reverb and avoids using the same reverb on every drum channel. Chapter 8: Work in Progress Richard shows us a track he is currently working on, again looking at drum busses, backing vocal treatment and track summing. He discusses how to make a sample bass instrument sound as realistic as possible. Chapter 9: Vocals The track in this session is heavy on the background vocals, Richard discusses ways he would treat a vocal in his session, using sidechain techniques with Nicky Romero Kickstart. He talks on the importance of the positioning of effects in your effect rack, while discussing useful vocal plugins like Vocal Strip by SSL, Multiband compression using Fab Filter Pro MB and the Sonarworks Reference 4. Q/A - 2 In ableton, what is the equivalent of summing in Logic? What do you think of using old effect boxes? Room treatment using Sonarworks Reference 4, they have a headphone version as well.
Approaching a New Track w/ Carl BeeUsing a selection of audio samples, Sub37 MIDI editor, TR8s, Arturia Prophet V and a range of stock Logic 10 plugins, Carl creates a deep, hypnotic track from scratch. Sharing a range of tips and tricks to get your production process flowing. You will learn: Writing drums Writing basslines Writing chords Creating a groove Using automation to create a build Arrangement tips Designing a lead instrument Creating tension & release Chapter 1: Drums & Bass Using the drum samples, Carl Bee starts to carve a loop to make his own rhythms. He uses Sub Boom Bass to create a bassline played in 1/16th notes. Chapter 2: Chords & Groove Stating that he is not a keyboard player, Carl shows us how he uses the Chord Trigger MIDI effect in Logic. Along with the Retro Synth plugin, he begins to write out chords for the track. Carl then starts to work with Ultrabeat to write in hat patterns. Chapter 3: Strings & Leads Using Alchemy to create a string pattern. Carl explains how to chop a loop up into a MIDI playable instrument making it easier to tweak and manipulate. He creates the lead sound using Arturia’s Prophet V software synthesizer. Q/A - 1 Don’t get stuck in a loop. How this track would be arranged. Where did you find the samples from this track from? Splice Samples Chapter 4: Recap Recapping on all the parts Carl has produced for this track, so far working with a kick drum, hats, strings, chords, bass and a sampled effect. Chapter 5: Percussion Carl looks at flex timing shaker loops and adds in an additional hat to add pace to the track. He uses LFOTool to shape the volume of the loop. Chapter 6: Mid Range Sounds Using Alchemy again to create a lead sound, Carl goes on with the arrangement which he states helps him decide what other sounds are needed, He answers a question on how long the breakdown should be, and how he created a unique sound for himself. Chapter 7: Break & Build Using automation processes to create an interesting build. Carl implements his send channels to create tension and release in the track. Using a reverb bus, single band EQ automation and a pitch effect on the arp, using Waves SoundShifter Q/A - 2 How many reverbs do you use? Do you do the final mixdown right at the end? Live Performance with Ableton & Hardware w/ Saytek Saytek is one of the most sought after live performers in the world. In this course, he dives into how to use Ableton for live performance, then dwelling on types of hardware you can buy to aid a live performance set up. Chapter 2: Working in session view The main way you can perform live in Ableton is through session view. In this mode, loops and music parts are arranged in order to when they should come into the track. Use colours to help you visualise the order. Chapter 3: Transitional effects Keeping it simple so you can trigger audio with one hand, assign MIDI functions to filters and other effects to transition between tracks in a live session. Chapter 4: Hardware Introduction Hardware has several limitations, this is why when purchasing your live set up, you should be completely clear on what you need the hardware to do. Saytek gives us an insight into his live setup. Chapter 5: Controllers The first piece of kit you should consider for a live performance is controllers, posing the ability to play keys, trigger samples, map effects and so much more. Examples: Akai LPD, Ableton Push, Novation Launchpad Chapter 6: Grooveboxes Nowadays, samplers and sequencers are integrated in grooveboxes. A groovebox is a studio in the box with live performance capabilities. Examples: Analog Rhythm Groove 2, Akai MPC, Roland MC707 Chapter 7: Analog & Digital Synthesizers The more expensive of the hardware range. Saytek discusses the pros and cons of synthesizers, varying in price drastically and looking into vintage gear as well. Examples: Moog One Polyphonic Synth, Mother 32, Behringer TD-3, Volca range by Korg Chapter 8: Modular Set Ups Modular set ups involve multiple bits of synthesizers that you route together and build your own synths and patches.
