Fry Ups gives a class on Acapella’s, explaining what they are and how you can obtain them using the Phase Cancellation technique, as well as a look into software that can extract vocals and sites you can download acapellas from.

Lessons: 

1. What is Acapella?

In modern culture, an acapella is used to describe the isolated vocal track from a multi-track recording that originally included music. Fry elaborates on this while looking into the technology we have today.

2. Phrase Cancellation

Like a magic trick, Phase Cancellation is an audio phenomenon in which two or more out of phase sound waves result in weakened or lost frequencies. You can use this method this obtain acapellas from existing soundtracks.

3. Acapella Creation Software

A look into softwares like Izotope Rx7, Hit n Mix, Audionamix, Phonic Mind and the free Acapella Extractor that can help extract acapellas.

4. Detecting The Key

It’s important to know what key the acapella is in once it’s extracted. Fry explains softwares that can do this for you, including Traktor, Rekordbox and Mixed in Key.

5. Creating Harmonies

In music, harmony is the process by which the composition of individual sounds, or superpositions of sounds, is analysed by hearing. Usually this means simultaneously occurring frequencies, pitches or chords. 

6. Production Techniques

What you can do with vocals; looping, vocal instruments, reverse reverbs, stutter effect and filters. Fry shows us how to create a reverse reverb using an acapella.

Stating that these are the best plugins for him, there are several plugins on the market that you can explore to find out which works best for you.

10. Sampling the Vocal 

Using the long reverse reverb effect created in the last chapter, Fry shows us how to sample effects throughout the track. He uses Keilworth Audio VPS philta XL and Logic’s brand new (10.5) sampler to create stutter effects.

11. Vocal Looping

Choosing a section of the vocal singer holds the note, you can loop those parts and apply effects to create interesting drone sounds. 

12. Using Alchemy To Create a Vocal Instrument 

With the option of spectral and granular synthesis, Alchemy can analyse the audio sample and create a virtual instrument out of any sample you put into it.

Fry Ups is a DJ/Producer and artist based in Manchester, UK. IN 2020, his remixes have been played on Radio 1 Dance Anthems, Capital FM and various other radio stations.

Reverse engineering one of his tracks “I Believe In You” that Fry Ups wrote in 2018. He works in Logic Pro X using a wide range of vocal enhancing plugins.

Using Distortion in the Mix w/ Glimpse (Dense & Pika) Distortion is a vital tool for electronic music, using it well can make instruments stand out and ‘thicken’ them up. In this workshop, Glimpse dives into using distortion on drums, vocals and setting instruments up in the mix. You will learn: Distortion in drums Master EQ settings Distortion in vocals Giving sounds presence Chapter 1: Distortion in drums Looking at adding distortion to hats, claps and shakers too make them stand out in the mix. Glimpse talks about treating kick drums Chapter 2: Master EQ Glimpse shows us what a common dance music EQ would look like and touches on using noise in the mix. Chapter 3: Vocals Looking at a recorded vocal, Glimpse explains how he would treat it and fit it into the mix. Chapter 4: Giving sounds presence How to make certain sounds shine in the mix, Glimpse shares a tip on putting a hat on top of the kick and other techniques to improve your mix. Working with Logic Pro Sampler w/ EnyonLooking at the new Logic Pro Sampler. Enyon covers recording sounds, mapping them and triggering samples with MIDI. He takes a detailed look into the Quick Sampler, that can automatically slice a sample and pitch it. You will learn: Using the Quick Sampler Sampling drums Recording live audio samples Sampling rhodes & keys Pitching & Mapping samples Chapter 1: QUICK SAMPLER Only available in Logic 10.5, the new sampler creates a world of possibilities, allowing record input functions and drag and drop features for easily capturing and processing audio samples. Virtual Instruments in Logic Pro - Ultrabeat w/ EnyonAn indepth class into designing drum sequences using Logic Pro’s Ultrabeat. Enyon shows us various ways to make the most use out of Ultrabeat, which is a combination of a sampler, synthesiser and tone generator. You will learn: Using Ultrabeat like a pro Drum bussing Effects for drums Synthesising drums Chapter 1: Ultrabeat Ultrabeat is a combination of a sampler, synthesiser and tone generator. Enyon shows us how to set up multi-output drum channels via Ultrabeat and his process of creating drum busses, routing audio channels and more. He uses Valhalla SuperMassive Reverb - A free plug-in from Valhalla, and Smartelectronix by Bram & Sean. Chapter 2: Ultrabeat Continued A look into detailed bussing, applying effects to the clap, creating various sequences (Ultrabeat allows the creation of 24 different sequences). Chapter 3: Velocity & Envelope Controls Velocity changes within drums can simulate a live drummer style of playing, what our ears are used to. Chapter 4: Synthesising Drums Some of the initial preset banks are synthesised sounds, Enyon shows us how to create drums from sine waves.
Production Techniques & Sound Design for Balearics & Disco w/ Alessandro Doretto Looking into a slower genre of dance music, Ballearics, Alessandro shows us his process in crafting sounds to fit the track, making drums groove, transitional effects and working with a choir vocal You will learn: MIDI Drum Patterns Writing Melodies Creating Arpeggios Sampling a vocal Transitional Effects Sampling guitars Arrangement Chapter 1: Introduction Working at 105BPM, Alessandro goes through the 2 variations of the track he will be going through for this session. Chapter 2: The Drums Looking into creating live sounding drums, Alessandro shares his tips for creating MIDI drum patterns. Chapter 3: Melodies Creating pads and using a Fender Rhodes sample, this is how Alessandro created the melody and chord structure for this Balearic track. Chapter 4: Arpeggios Using Operator and Ableton’s Arpeggiator effect for MIDI, Alessandro creates emotive arps to fill up the track. Chapter 5: Transitional Effects & Arrangement How to fill up space with transitional effects and introduce new sections into the track. Q/A - 1 Writing bass notes Creating rhythm sections Layering bass and chords Sampling strings Chapter 6: The Rhythm Section Looking at a different track to the previous chapter, Alessandro breaks down the rhythm section he created for this track . Chapter 7: Bass & Chords Looking at sub-bass he wrote using 16th notes and 3/16th notes. The chords follow the root note and melody of the bass. He then looks at adding groove to the chord pattern (via the groove pool) to make it more human. Chapter 8: Strings & Guitars Using the “String Female Voice” preset from Ableton, Alessandro creates a moving string pattern to sit in the background of the track. He looks at automating the MIDI clip in session view. Chapter 9: Arpeggiators Creating movement using arpeggiators, initial sound created with Ableton’s Operator instrument. Chapter 10: Vocal Sampling Using a Maasai vocal pack to create a choir like dreamy vocal channel, Alessandro talks about the final stages of the track. Track Deconstruction: Colly Wolly w/ JackyINTRODUCTION TO JACKY Chapter 1: Starting the track Jacky looks at his template which he starts every track with. In it he has set up 1 audio track and 1 MIDI track. He then shows us his Return channel template, which consists of 5 return channels, 1 Reverb and 4 Ping Pong Delays. Chapter 2: Arranging the project Jacky shows us how he organises his projects, stating that organisation is key. He labels various sections of the track (intro, break, ride, etc) so that he can quickly jump to sections within the project. Chapter 3: Transient Envelopes Using Ableton's transient warp feature, Jacky highlights an interesting way to work with loops. By adjusting transient lengths you can change how a loop sounds entirely. Chapter 4: Audio Effect Racks Grouping audio effects can speed up your workflow, Jacky has his audio effect rack template as his go-to for every channel. It consists of a Compressor, EQ Eight, Auto Filter, Utility and Simple Delay.
